Hi everyone,
Today is a good day.
Not because the weather outside is decent. Not because worship wasn’t bad today. Not because I actually quite enjoy Sundays for all that they are, all things considered.
But today is good because my mom is back from her travels and she brought back something for me that I’ve been waiting for roughly for like 2 months now. I won’t get into the nitty gritty of what it is, as what it is doesn’t matter as much as how it’s making me feel… which is excited, joyful, and really looking forward to how this piece of tech is going to add to my life.
And now the cat’s out of the bag and you know what I’m talking about. A piece of tech??? Not some fancy jewellery, a rare ancient artifact, or a magnet souvenir?? You might have thought it’d be something more special than a bunch of wires and software.
But… we all see joy in different ways. We see love in different places. We see God where others might just see nothing special.
It’s in these moments that we can cherish God speaking to us. It’s in these times we can see God with us. It’s in many and various ways that God is revealed.
These are the readings for next Sunday:
Acts 2:14a, 36-41
Psalm 116:1-4, 12-19
1 Peter 1:17-23
Luke 24:13-35
I always found this road to Emmaus story interesting, because you’d think that these two disciples who claim to even be disciples and “part of the group” would recognise Jesus. But for some reason they don’t. They even get annoyed with him at one point which is hilarious, and they still don’t know it’s Jesus.
In Jesus walking with them, they don’t see him. In Jesus teaching them, they don’t see him. Even when they invite him to stay with them, they don’t see him.
But it’s in the breaking of the bread. In the act of sharing. In the true staple and heart of community, they see Jesus, loud and clear (if you can hear seeing, that is).
And to be able to see Jesus is a gift. Not a gift in the way that we’re so talented that we can see him, but a gift that is given to us by God, one that gives us hope, peace, and joy. To be able to see Jesus in the world, in our everyday lives, in the blessings of community and relationship is food for our faith and spirits.
Friends, Jesus is with us whether we see him, recognise him, or acknowledge him or not. He is with us if we are looking for him, expecting him, or trying to see him or not. He is with us in the obvious, not so obvious, and the completely shocking. He is with us.
Thanks be to God! Have a great week, everyone!
