Hi everyone,
So I’m pretty tired today.
Some of you might know why. It was a pretty busy day. I mean, not only did we have our own worship service this morning, but there was and installation service this afternoon that I helped lead. And to top it off, there was a council meeting in between them.
But don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. In fact, I actually feel honoured that I could be part of these different things. Because honestly? I was tired before I started, and so my “A-game” wasn’t exactly there. But I was still able to do what I do. No one told me to get lost. I wasn’t excluded for being imperfect.
And that’s sometimes the fear, right? That we aren’t good enough, smart enough, or talented enough? Maybe we refuse to do stuff because we know it won’t meet the standards that we perhaps put on ourselves. Or maybe we shoehorn ourselves (or are shoehorned by someone else) into a box that isn’t exactly us. Or, worse yet, maybe we believe the lies that we’re told about who we are and where we fall in the great grand scheme of things.
That lie is that there even is a hierarchy in that scheme.
Here are the readings for next week:
Jeremiah 31:31-34
Psalm 46
Romans 3:19-28
John 8:31-36
And a video of these readings being read:
These are the texts that we get for every Reformation Sunday. And when that happens, you know they are the most appropriate because there was no other choice. But freedom is the theme of course, and often when we hear that we think that we are given freedom to do whatever we want.
Except, we don’t have that.
I mean, there are laws and stuff. Rules. Expectations of how we should or shouldn’t act. If anything, it sometimes feels like our faith gives us more restrictions.
But I think our freedom isn’t a freedom to do, per se. But more a freedom to be. We are free to be tired, worried, and imperfect. We are free to be unsure, uneasy, and unqualified. We are free to be us… that is, fallen but saved, broken but healed, sinful but forgiven children of God.
And to be, that is true freedom, as we needn’t be burdened by the weight of the world but know that we are free to be loved, to be God’s people, to just simply be.
Thanks be to God! Have a great week, everyone!
